Sailing Canoe Flower

aloha poets,
Sailing canoe flower inspires today. Enjoy!

Navigator Mau Piailug 1932-2010

"...a voyager's heart of stars, wind, waves, dolphin and seabird..."

This flower remains in remembrance of Mau
Who was truly of the ancient maritime crew
Deep water sailing, your canoe filled the need
Navigational sails borne of grandfather's seed

Islands of the Pacific, your Satawai stood far
For your fish and trade, blue oceans set the bar
To go west and south, a Yap-built sailing canoe
Stars, winds, and waves, their secrets you knew

Navigational blurs as human intellectual histories go
Sextants and compasses now direct, feel the wind blow
A place in time, a Pacific mariner captured wave
Mau Piailug, last of a breed, island born ocean brave

Somewhere on the blue sails the voyager's heart
Natural resources grow rare, sailing plays its part
Traditional knowledge, sailing canoe was the word
Live on, mystic journey, amidst dolphin and seabird
