Japan welcomes the Year of the Tiger today (the rest of Asia will welcome the Tiger Feb 14 (yes, our Valentine's Day)).
Tigers are gracious, fiery, independent, and brave, making all things seem possible. They live dangerously, yet show a friendly loving and generous side, putting old battles to rest. Best of all, a tiger stands up against wrongs and goes up against authority with a vigorous willingness to voice objections (ancient Chinese writers especially admired this form of courage).
